The Romans Road

Some people call it the highway to heaven! I'm afraid there is no highway - the Bible states it is a narrow road. We need to make people aware of this and also remember it ourselves.

Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it." NASB

After a person's ears have been pried open to the Word and after the seed has been planted, you may have the opportunity to lead the person to Christ. Wow! If you do get the chance, don't ever hesitate to lose this great blessing.

The easiest way to lead a person to Christ is by your own personal experience - telling what God has done for you and seen you through. Also, your silent witness - how you live and how you handle things.

But there is another way that works in other situations that is not a bunch memorizing and sounding like a broken record.

We always called it The Romans Road when we worked with teenagers. It is four basic verses in Romans (that you grew up with).

The Romans Road Map

Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." NASB

God gives us the power to overcome and the power of salvation for all who believe. He gives freely, all we have to do is ask. It is what he want's for all of us (salvation).

Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" NASB

We need God's power in the first verse to help with sin. We all have a problem with sin. And sin is just missing the mark. We didn't have to be taught to have a sinful heart, that comes naturally. What we do need to do is recognize it, and want to be clean.

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." NASB

Wow! How does that sound? Eternal life in Heaven. What do you have to lose?? What a gift! Jesus came to earth to be the bridge for us to get to God and Heaven.

Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." NASB

It is easy to get this eternal life. But you must be serious in your heart.

Romans 10:9 "That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved" NASB

All we have to do is confess our sins to God through prayer, and ask for forgiveness. This involves agreeing with God that you have a need for salvation. Then receive by faith in Christ Jesus alone, the gift of salvation that He so freely offers to all who believe.

You don't even have to memorize them verbatim - just know them and be ready to use them. Keep them fresh in your mind and be ready at all times. You never know when He has put you in a particular place at a particular time to do something for Him.

God is speaking through the prophet Isaiah:

Isaiah 55:8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Neither are your ways My ways," declares the Lord." NASB

We are doing people an injustice if we just say pray this prayer and you're in. Boy, they will miss a lot of blessings, never grow, and may not even have truly had the faith to accept this gift. A very important part of this process is that we don't just drop the ball there. A new Christian needs a coach (for lack of a better word). They need someone to show them the way so they can get off the milk and eat the solid food God talks about in His inherent word.

1 Peter 2:1-3 "Therefore, putting aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord." NASB

An accountability partner is allowed - at the very least pray for this person daily that they find a Bible believing church and someone gets them involved. God uses many of us sometimes to bring just one person to a saving knowledge. And that's worth it all! Jesus would've died for just one. Just Me! I have faith in that love. It is so exciting to share it. Don't miss the opportunity if He gives it to you.

  • You might be the seed sower
  • You might be the one who waters
  • You might be the one which leads
  • You might be the one who helps them grow

We all have a role in the process.

1 Corinthians 3:7-8 "So then the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor." NASB
